Get it done

Article Abstract:

The governor of Bangkok, Bhichit Rattakul, is promising to improve the city's economic, industrial and environmental situation. These will be hard promises to keep because Bangkok has profound problems with pollution and traffic congestion. However, if he succeeds, Rattakul is likely to move on to a better political position because he is well educated and comes from a good family. Rattakul says he is only interested in his present job. His background and reputation for hard work, plain speaking and ability to get things done appeals to the Thai people.

The colour of money: Indonesian artists are hitting the big time

Article Abstract:

Art has become a popular investment in Indonesia and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, with antique works by local artists reaping the most impressive prices. Raden Saleh's The Deer Hunt sold for $2.1 million in March 1996, and Walter Spies' The Landscape and Her Children went for $703,000 in Oct 1995. People eager both to invest and to display thir power and status want to keep local art in the region, while European collectors whose economy is in the doldrums are more willing to sell. However, knowledge is vital to the investor.
