Furniture industry output in Germany was valued at around 41.6 billion in 1997. Up to 100 furniture suppliers shut down in 1997 due to competition from imports and pressure from larger retailers. Household furnishings and textiles industries saw turnover of 9.44 billion in 1997, but the overall market fell by about 6% to 26.75 deutschemarks. Expenditure on furniture and furnishings is expected to stay sluggish.

Furniture production in Italy increasing during 1997 by 3.6%, with imports up by 17.5%. Exports also performed well, however consumption saw growth of just 1.5% in value. Furniture and furnishings production rose by about 2% in the first few months of 1998. Benefits to both home and export sales are expected, following higher economic growth rates, and annual growth rates of around 2-3% are forecasted.
