Kentucky tobacco growers are outraged by the growing anti-tobacco sentiment in Washington, DC. With an annual tobacco crop of $800 million, Kentucky is more dependent on tobacco than any other state. If the presidential race gets more competitive, Clinton may make pro-tobacco promises in Kentucky.

Tobacco industry officials may come to a settlement with the many litigants and groups who have sued them over the harmfulness of cigarettes. Tenets of the settlement include regulation of cigarettes as a drug, paying billions to litigants and health funds, and bans on advertising.

Chewing big tobacco

Article Abstract:

The much touted agreement by the tobacco industry to pay $368 billion over 25 years to compensate governments for smoking-related health costs now seems inadequate. Perhaps a better approach may be to force the tobacco industry to cut deals with individual states.
