France's secret loves

Article Abstract:

There are questions as to whether the Christian Democrats in Germany were funded from French taxes, through President Francois Mitterand. Elf, a petroleum company which acquired a refinery and gasoline stations in eastern Germany, is also said to have been involved. There have been other scandals in France, and the French investigations have been seen as similar to those of Italy during the early 1990s. There are differences, however, and there is greater admiration for the French state than for the Italian state.

France has seen a number of corruption investigations in the 1990s and this is linked to disillusion with the political class. The cost of corruption became apparent when unemployment rose, and corruption was made easier by the sheer weight of the French state. French voters are also concerned about arrogance which is linked to an emphasis on personalities in French politics. The old-boy network remains due to the system of education which creates elites. This means that jobs will be offered within elites.
