Article Abstract:
According to analysts Richard Hyman of Verdict Research and Robert Clark, an independent analyst it appears unavoidable that Wal-Mart will come to France. In order to reach its objective of becoming an important operator in Europe, it must be present in the three principal countries - Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. The analysts cite Auchan as the only possible target in France. Mr Hyman says that Wal-Mart may try to buy the new Carrefour, however, since Wal-Mart is three times bigger than Carrefour-Promodes. Wal-Mart may have difficulties developing in Europe and in France. The Wal-Mart concept, based on volume (low prices, economies of scale, and maximised volumes) without great added value in the stores, does not appear adapted to European consumers who are more sophisticated and demanding than North Americans.

Article Abstract:
Auchan, the French retail group, has set the objective of being one of the three retail leaders in Europe by 2005. In order to achieve this objective, it must open 50 hypermarkets per year, and it must accelerate its development, particularly in Eastern Europe and Asia. This development will favour the creation of stores and shopping centres rather than making acquisitions. The group plans to open a third hypermarket in Mexico, a second in Argentina, 30 in China, 10 in Thailand, 20 in Hungary, and 50 in Poland.
