France: A look at Elvia

Article Abstract:

Elvia, the French traveller assistance insurance company, has been a subsidiary of the Mondial Assistance group since 1995. It began its insurance activity in Switzerland in 1950. People responsible for assistance are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They advise the policyholders before their departure and take charge of accidents. The information is then transmitted to an emergency doctor who will decide whether or not the victim should be repatriated. Elvia uses the Mondial Assistance network for local hospitalisations. Elvia assists 60% of French tourists and carries out 3,000 repatriations per year including a hundred by private airplane. Airplanes are the biggest item of expenditure for medical assistance. Elvia handled 12,000 cases in 2000, and made a turnover of FFr 337mn.
