The care and feeding of your American management

Article Abstract:

European investors in US ventures must consider cultural differences in managing their new acquisitions. Americans are seen as having an optimistic, 'can-do' attitude which is sometimes deemed to reflect superficiality and an overemphasis on short-term results. American attitudes toward foreigners sometimes come across as patronizing and ethnocentric, and an American lack of foreign language ability is portrayed as naive and arrogant. Mobility is important to the US manager, who also tends to expect incentives. It is suggested that European acquirers of US operations should avoid hesitation in management, establish clear goals, strike necessary bargains, and provide direction.

Takeover misery

Article Abstract:

Three factors that characterize successful acquisitions are that both the acquiring company and the acquired company are in the same industry, that the acquiring company carefully considers the market position of the acquired company, and that the acquired company is financially healthy. Other important indicators that distinguish a successful acquisition are the clear communication of corporate objectives to employees of the acquired company and the minimization of stress-inducing uncertainty among employees of the acquired company over the direction to be taken by the acquiring company.
