Flag of convenience

Article Abstract:

The Brazilian industrial development minister is seeking to encourage mergers in major industries such as paper, petrochemicals and steel, to help Brazilian companies compete in global markets. Mergers between Brazilian companies can affect domestic competition, and critics argue that it is better for Brazilian companies to be purchased by multinationals. Airlines could use joint ventures to compete more successfully, rather than merging. Mergers may make more sense in industries where much of production is exported.
