The U.S. and 1992: a time of tension

Article Abstract:

The current tension threatening the stability of the US-European alliance has its roots in the unfavorable US balance of trade with the European Community (EC) and the redefinition of the concept of security from military to economic terms in US attitudes. Trade disputes with Europe were avoided in the past by the necessities of alliance unity and economic issues. Steps must be taken to reduce friction between the US and the EC, including: publicly recognizing the consequences of continued trade tensions by both sides; publicly accepting a stronger Europe by the US; and establishing a compromise by Europeans over the concept of reciprocity.

Article Abstract:

The impending European economic integration in 1992 is expected to favor continued high growth in Frankfurt and the south of Germany; Paris, and the south of France; and northern and central Italy. The European Commission, believing that widening disparities will undermine the integrity of the single market, has introduced a new regional development plan in order to equalize prosperity amongst Community regions. The plan calls for the distribution of development funds to stimulate growth among the historically underdeveloped peripheral regions of Europe and the economically depressed traditional industrial regions.
