FRANCE: ADSL USERS PROTEST AGAINST NETISSIMO

Article Abstract:

ADSL services, which are expected to cover 300 cities in France before 31 December 2000, are still facing technical trouble one year after their introduction, while being blamed for being too slow. The blame is put on France Telecom for this (with its Netissimo service), including a recent ten-year breakdown which affected a BAS (Broadband Access Server) in the Paris area, according to ADSL, also the name of an association of angry surfers in France. FTDSL, the ADSL department at France Telecom denies that a BAS might be broken down for over a half-day, though occasional interruptions are possible. FTDSL also admits that its technical support service (which gets the poorest satisfaction mark) needs to be improved. ADSL, which claims almost 4,000 members out of the 50,000 subscribing to Netissimo, also wants more openness from Internet providers, which may be blamed for the slowness of throughput made available to their subscribers every time they try to save money from the bandwidth capacity they buy from France Telecom.
