Article Abstract:
Paysans.org is the on-line sales site created at the initiative of French wine-grower Francis Brodut with the purpose of enabling small farmers to sell their products at higher prices and enabling consumers to acquire them less expensively. The Paysans.org procedure is based on the principal of equitable trade. Farmers can sell their products directly, by-passing middlemen, particularly large retailers. Paysans.org has also invented the concept of a farm basket - a basket containing farm products for five people for a week which is to be delivered on the day and at the time chosen by the client. Paysans.org's goal is to be able to increase the producers' turnover by 10% to 15%, without additional costs and to be 10% to 15% less expensive for consumers. In order to reach this objective, Paysans.org must cut its operating costs, including delivery costs. The standard farm basket costs FFr 300 excluding delivery, while it would cost FFr 500 in supermarkets. This cost rises to FFr 580 when delivery prices are included. Despite this, Paysans.org already has 2,000 regular clients, mainly due to word of mouth.
