FRANCE: INNOVATION TO DEVELOP THE SUGAR MARKET

Article Abstract:

Innovation in products and packaging helps develop the sugar market in France. The market of speciality sugar products turned over FFr 468mn in the year to 1 October 2000, up 5.9% with a 4.6% increase in sales by volume with 45,743 tons. Light sugar is doing fine too, with 3,038 tons, up 10.8% and FFr 139mn, up 12.4%. On the other hand, standard white sugar, the biggest contribution with 235,710 tons, fell 11.1% with FFr 1.875bn in sales, down 9.3%, the result of a lower consumption of home-made cakes, the bad fruit season for jams, and a lower sugar consumption at breakfast, to the profit of cereals and fruit juices. The sugar market reached FFr 2.6bn in total, down 6.6% with 244,813 tons, down 9.4% in the year to 1 October 2000. Special sugar (14% of volume sales in total, 23.7% by value) should concentrate the most of innovation and promotion in 2001. Standard sugar contributes 86% to volume sales, and 76.3% to sales by value.
