European stockmarkets: too many trading places

Thirty-two stock exchanges and 23 options and futures markets exist in the European Community, and that is too many. Most companies and investors would rather see fewer, more powerful exchanges. Exchanges are now facing competition from other electronic trading systems.

China's experiment in stockmarkets was largely successful in 1992, earning the third-best international share price increases at 110%. However, the reform government has been far too slow to establish national corporate and securities regulations.
