Article Abstract:
The European Transport Council has launched a tendering process to identify and provide a range of navigation services for Europe's new Galileo satellite navigation network. The tender is part of a Galileo definition phase that is being conducted by the Council, following its decision at the start of Apr 2001, to proceed with the next phase of Galileo. The European Comission and European Space Agency are putting into place a temporary management structure that will perform general coordination of the program, including technical aspects.

FMC Airport Products and Systems Division and WhereNet Corp are developing a product to track airport ground support equipment called WhereNet Real Time Locating Systems. The product is the result of a technology alliance between the two firms. It uses small battery-powered wireless tags which are attached to vehicles or equipment items. It is a significant advancement that gives operators of ground support equipment immediate and highly accurate information on where their equipment is deployed.

Netherlands-based HITT has entered into an agreemetn with US Rannoch Corp for the Dutch company to manufacture and market the AirScene technology. AirScene is an aircraft tracking system that uses multilateration and automatic dependent surveillance to identify and track aircraft over wide areas as well as runway surface areas. HITT will deploy the AirScene technology as a sensor in combination with its radar-based surveillance system.
