Endesa joins bidding for Chile power firm

Article Abstract:

Endesa SA began a counterbid to acquire a controlling share of Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA. The $1.5 billion counteroffer launched a bidding war with Duke Energy Corp. for control of Empresa Nacional de Electricidad, which is also known as Endesa Chile. The battle for Empresa is taking place as US and European electricity markets are opening their doors to competition. The acquisition of Endesa Chile would give either Duke or Endesa a strong presence in the Latin American region.
