Edith Cresson, Europe's controversial commissioner

European commissioner, Edith Cresson, is a populist politician who became education and science commisioner in 1995. The European Parliament is seeking her resignation with allegations of malpractice and mismanagement made against the commission. She claims a conspiracy against her, involving Germany. The commission is seen as weak under the presidency of Jacques Santer, and this gives the European Parliament greater freedom to attack the commission. There has also been a report from an internal auditor, which has provided ammunition, and the culture of the European Union may be changing.
