Malaysian prime minister Mahathir's restrictions on foreign investors is further damaging the Malaysian stock market. Mahathir blames large foreign investors for the market's decline and has banned short selling and created a fund to buy stocks from domestic, but not foreign, investors.

Mahathir has been reluctant to adopt austere policies needed to buoy the economy, resorting instead to unconventional measures that flirt with political and economic disaster. Mahathir blames foreign partners on economic problems and does not realize the interdependence in the region.
