Sales of audio visual equipment in Belgium are expected to stabilize during 1997-98 whilst increasing competition is likely to cause prices to fall. The audio visual equipment market fell by 5% in 1996 from a total value of BFr40.3 billion in 1995. The market for domestic appliances in Belgium is variable, with sales of dishwashers forecasted to grow by over 8% whilst sales of vacuum cleaners are falling. The total domestic appliances market for 1995 was valued at BFr49.6 billion. Imported audio visual equipment increased by 16.8% in 1995 in contrast to a decline in the export trade.

Belgium's retail market for audio visual equipment and domestic appliances has been in decline for several years, with domestic appliance sales falling 4.8% to 51.4 billion Belgian Francs in 1993 from 1992. Consumer spending on radio and television equipment fell 7.2% to 34 billion Belgian Francs in 1993 from 1992. Production of electronic and electrical appliances decreased 7.5% to 28.29 billion Belgian Francs in 1993. The consumer electronics and domestic appliances markets are dominated by imports. The markets are examined.

In 1995, Belgian production of domestic appliances totalled 10.1 billion Belgian Francs (BFr). The market mainly includes built-in hobs, fryers, cooker hoods, and small washing machines. Meanwhile, production of audiovisual products fell 5% to BFr40 million. An overview of the markets for domestic appliances and audio visual equipment in Belgium is given, including details of foreign trade and forecasts for the future.
