Privatized UK companies such as British Telecom and British Airways are more profitable in 1994 than before their privatization, yet many British citizens and politicians do not favor privatization. But if regulated, privatization can increase productivity and performance.

The UK's campaign to privatize state-run firms, begun under Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, has stalled under John Major. The Major administration is pulling back from its plans to take British Coal and British Rail private, but it may privatize the Post Office.

Article Abstract:

The UK Board of Trade is currently engaged in determining whether to break up British Coal as part of its privatization, or to allow to remain unified. The firm's managers oppose divestiture, and they have some strong economic arguments in their favor.
