Denmark: Mobile phone subsidies to rise again

The subsidies paid by mobile telephony companies to clients' phones are expected to rise as from 2003 and are expected to be back at their 1999 level by 2004, according to the Danish telecoms consultant Strand Consult. The combined subsidies paid by the mobile telephony business to new hones dropped from Dkr1.1bn in 1999 to DKr0.5bn this year and is expected to remain unchanged in 2002. The anticipated increase in subsidies is ascribed to the new UMTS technology as UMTS phones will be more expensive compared with mobile phones today. Operators will have to subsidies the new phones in order to make clients to switch over to the new technology.

Denmark: UMTS winners on the lookout for partners

Article Abstract:

The winners of the UMTS licenses in Denmark are on the lookout for partners in order to be able to fulfil the requirements of the UMTS deal. Sonofon, that was not awarded a license, is one of the players in the Danish market that is now expected to obtain invitations from the UMTS winners. Telecoms analyst John Strand of Strand Consult mentions Debitel, which is the biggest of the existing virtual operators in Denmark, as a suitable partner for the UMTS companies. Debitel's client base at the end of the first half of 2001 was 253,000 which entails 5% of all Danish mobile calls.

Denmark: Orange to spend DKr3bn on UMTS network
