Denmark: DI forecasts downturn for the food industry

Article Abstract:

The latest forecast by Dansk Industri (DI), the Confederation of Danish Industries, anticipates a downturn for the Danish food industry. DI expects Holland soon to regain its role as the major global supplier of pork following BSE-related problems and the export stop caused by the foot-and-mouth disease. Besides, Brazilian and Canadian pork producers are in the process of boosting production, which will put further pressure on Danish producers. The trade indicator for the food industry has dropped from 39% six months ago to -3%. Foodstuffs account for 20% of Danish exports but this figure is expected to drop. Food exports in 2001 are expected to amount to DKr60bn (US$7.2bn).
