DIY goods in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Retail sales of DIY goods in the Netherlands reached 6.1-6.2 billion Dutch florints in 1995, from 5.8-5.9 billion Dutch florints in 1994. There are around 4,700 retail outlets for DIY goods, including around 500 large DIY stores and 1,500 smaller DIY stores. Large stores account for around 51% of sales, with smaller stores taking 18%. It is believed that sales of DIY goods will rise at a moderate rate, with sales reaching 7-7.5 billion Dutch florints by the year 2000 at 1995 prices.

Sales of do-it-yourself (DIY) products in Europe increased during the 1990-94 period due to rising home ownership and growing acceptance of the DIY concept as a worthwhile hobby. The growth has also been attributed to the global recession which prompted consumers to do more DIY tasks and to the declining number of tradesmen and the high cost of their labor. The top growth DIY market during the period was Germany. Spain was another growth market during the same period.
