Both Telenor of Norway and Telia of Sweden are interested in buying stakes in Sonofon, a Danish mobile telephony company. Telenor CEO Tormod Hermansen said yesterday that he has recently visited BellSouth of the US, which is a major shareholder in Sonofon, but declined to reveal more details about the matter. Borsen's source in Swedish Telia says even Telia is planning to submit a bid for Sonofon. Telia's own Danish mobile telephony company is not successful and by acquiring Sonofon, Telia would rapidly become an effective operator in Denmark. Another motive behind Telia's plans may also be a desire to make sure that its rival Telenor does not get Sonofon too cheap. Vodafone Airtouch has also been mentioned as a possible buyer of Sonofon. The company has not commented on this rumour. MD Jorgen Lindegaard of GN Store Nord, which is Sonofon's Danish shareholder, declines to comment rumours about a possible sale of Sonofon.

TDC, the Danish telecoms company, has finally following lengthy discussions with the Czech state reached an agreement to take over the Czech state's 51% stake in the listed radio and telecommunications company Ceske Radiokomunikace. According to TDC deputy CEO, Torben V. Holm, the company is satisfied now that it will gain control and will be able to lay out the company's business strategy. Part of the deal makes it possible for TDC to boost its share in Contactel to 100%, which TDC intends to do within a couple of years' time. Contactel is the leading Internet and computer service provider in Denmark.

Sonofon, the Danish telecoms operator, has boosted its share of corporate mobile clients at the expense of TDC, according to an analysis by Greens Analyseinstitut. A third of the interviewees say that they have a Sonofon subscription for their mobile phone used at work whereas last year two out of three said TDC was their operator.
