DENMARK: SURPLUS IN PAYMENT BALANCE

Article Abstract:

The Danish payment balance shows a DKr 11.4bn (USD 1.5bn) surplus for 1999, according to preliminary figures by Danmarks Nationalbank, the Danish Central Bank. In December alone, the surplus was DKr 4.1bn. December was characterized by a surprisingly positive development of the trade balance, says Morten Kyhn, Den Danske Bank.

For the period November 1998-October 1999, the Danish payment balance showed a more than DKr 4bn (USD 545mn) surplus, according to Danmarks Statistik, the Danish statistical office. The is more than anticipated by prognosis makers. The main reason is a decline in imports, at the same time as exports are increasing.

For October, Danmarks Nationalbank, the Danish Central Bank, reports a DKr 2.0bn (USD 0.3bn) surplus in Denmark's payment balance. The trade balance showed a DKr 5.6bn surplus, whereas the interest rate balance showed a DKr 2.2bn deficit.
