Czechnological ideas

Article Abstract:

Six architectural practices, two from America and four from Britain, have been invited to submit designs for a technology park in Brno, Czechoslovakia. The park is on a 120ha site and will be developed as a joint venture between the Bovis Construction Group and the City of Brno in association with the Brno Technological University. Ideas are to be produced for the first phase, of high architectural quality and environmentally sensitive. The winning scheme will be announced on Aug 17 1992.

Complex Classicism

Article Abstract:

The classically designed Royal Hospital in Chelsea, UK was originally built by architect Sir Christopher Wren in the 1680s, with further adaptations being carried out by Sir John Soane during the 1780s. The hospital was originally intended to house up to 500 people, with various disabilities, therefore Wren designed the entrances and staircases to give easy access for disabled people. Soane was given the job of updating the hospital after it was found to be in a poor state of repair.

Reinventing the parish church

Article Abstract:

Architect, Michael Blee has designed a new church on the site of a Victorian parish church. The new churchcentre combines the congregations of three parishes as well as facilities for social and other activities. The design incorporates crucial elements of the existing church that act as a link to the history of the parish although the new structure is notably modern. Timber and steel are used extensively and the architect worked closely with craftsmen in the interior design.
