Creating jobs in the UK: the BAT example

Article Abstract:

The UK's BAT Industries is one of the UK's largest companies. It is a diversified company in the tobacco trade and retailing, paper, and financial services. BAT Industries created a subsidiary, BAT Industries Small Business Ltd, in 1981 to create jobs and promote small businesses in Liverpool and Southampton, England. A disused warehouse in Liverpool was converted into a space for 114 workshop units. Features included a simple two-page lease, low-cost common services, and free management advice. The Southampton project established a new enterprise agency, and it was soon followed by the redevelopment of a derelict department store in Brixton. All three projects have cost BAT Industries considerably more than was originally expected, but the company continued to support them in the belief that the projects were being well managed and were providing significant social and economic returns.
