Continental's sales soared to $2.3 billion in quarter

Continental AG announced that its group sales for the first quarter of 1999 improved by more than 50% to 2.1 billion euros ($2.3 billion). During the same period in 1998, Continental posted 1.38 billion euros in sales. The tire manufacturer's pretax profit for the period also rose to 108 million euros, an 9% improvement from the same period in 1998. This came after Continental's 22 million euros goodwill writeoff. The company also said that it is expecting to see its group sales rise to 17.5 billion marks ($9.7 billion) in 1999.
