Fast food and take-away categories are the largest group in the consumer catering market in terms of value with the travel area showing increased growth. Consumers are embracing ethnic and continental foods with a result that traditional fish and chip meals are less popular as healthy eating habits increase. Consumer outlets are calculated to be reduced by 8% over six years to 2000. Spending on catering reached 39 billion pounds sterling in 1995, up around 6% from 1994.

During the five years from 1991 to 1995, the savory snack sector has grown by 9.9% and amounts to 321,000 t, with an increase in value of 16.5% to 1.7 billion pounds sterling. This expansion is due to new varieties and flavours. Within this area, crisps were the leaders with 50% of the market value in 1995 and Walkers Snack Foods leads the manufacturers in the UK with 35% of market value.

Many customers see tyre replacement as low priority, and when buying will replace with economically priced tyres. Prices vary up to 25% between superior and cheaper brands.
