Companies are still hiring

Article Abstract:

Despite a downturn in the Asian job market, several Hong Kong industries are still looking for permanent employees. The oil and chemical sector expects the most growth, at 67%, while retail is at the bottom with 55%. In all, 22% of Chinese corporations and 35% of Hong Kong corporations expect to increase the amount of permanent hiring in this quarter, marking the lowest numbers in two years.

The annual rally in Hong Kong's Victoria Park marking the June 4, 1989, massacre in Tiananmen Square does not have the aura of civil disobedience or mark a blatant challenge to Hong Kong authorities because each side has come to tolerate the other in part because the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China has greater public support that other movements.

Exports fell 21% in March

Hong Kong's Census and Statistics Department reported that total exports in March dropped 1.2 percent from the year earlier, and imports dropped 1.5 percent.
