Chile's right in the shadow of an embarrassing old general

Article Abstract:

Chile is holding presidential elections in Dec 1999, and the conservative opposition will not be aided by the detention of General Augusto Pinochet, who may not be freed by that date. Pinochet is held in Britain, and there have been appeals from Chile to release him on grounds of ill health. Unemployment has risen in Chile, which could help the opposition, but the political right needs to show its democratic credentials. It is difficult to do this with Pinochet's arrest reviving interest in the atrocities committed when he was head of state.
