The Chek Lap Kok international airport in Hong Kong offers 15 airline lunges for business- and first-class passengers and airport shopping to pass the time waiting to a flight. For the passengers who cannot enjoy the laptop size televisions, comfy chairs, newspapers and magazines, the airport offers the Plaza Premium Lounge, which is the only lounge in the airport to charge a fee but where passengers have access to a buffet, showers, Internet workstations and other amenities such as an aromatherapy nap room or seated massage. The airport terminal's services are discussed.

Chek Lap Kok Airport opens amid economic turbulence

The new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok will open on Jul 6, 1998 amid the worst economic crisis in Asia. Hong Kong is beleguered by a dangerous drop in tourism, a burst real estate bubble and the city's first recession since 1985. The new airport, a 1,234-hectare island that has been dredged from the ocean floor, was completed following nine years and $20 bil.

Chek Lap Kok opens new doors to fliers with pay-per-use lounge

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok Airport has opened its Plaza Premium Lounge in Jul 1998. While typical lounges are offered as a privilege to business and first-class travelers, the new lounge is different because it is open to any interested passenger for a fee of HK$200 ($25) per visit. The payment covers use of showers, massage chairs and videos. Food and beverage choices include limited beer brands, ice cream, dimsum, smoked salmon and pizza. The Hong Kong Airport Authority claims to be the first to have pay-per-use public lounges, although other major airports are soon expected to offer their own.
