China appears to be enjoying relatively strong growth, and China looks set to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) soon, but many problems still remain. WTO membership will benefit China in the longer-term, but many in China have been hit by economic reforms aimed at securing membership.

The economic rise of China poses a challenge to other East Asian economies and their traditional 'flying geese' pattern of development. Neighbouring countries fear losing business to China, with its lower costs, but this may not happen as long as businesses are flexible.

The Chinese economy is expected to grow by 7.5-8% in 2001, helped by booming foreign investment, but consumer confidence remains weak. The main problems include unemployment and inefficient distribution of wealth.
