Carnage on the plain

Article Abstract:

Fighting between Ethiopia and Eritrea started in 1998 when there was a border dispute involving a village, Badme, seized by the Eritreans. There was a six-month pause until feb 1999 when the Eritreans had to retreat from Badme after an Ethiopian attack. Eritrea has a smaller population than Ethiopia, and there is a labor shortage in the capital, Asmara. Military spending accounts for 20% of Eritrea's national income. The national income itself is falling since Eritrea has lost Ethiopia as its main export market.

Eritrea and Ethiopia have become involved in a border dispute which has become less intense with the rainy season, but is likely to start again when the rain ends. The two countries were once allies, and there was no proper settlement when Eritrea became independent. Both countries are among Africa's poorest, and they are spending on arms. The leaders of both countries may be involved in the dispute in order to protect their domestic political positions.
