Copied to perfection: cloning accelerates breeding process

Article Abstract:

Thailand's tissue-culture industry, which began as an orchid breeding technique, has become a lucrative business. Orchid growers are receiving more plants to be cloned into plantlets from breeders worldwide. The advantages of cloning over the normal reproduction of seeds include that it produces plants that are identical to the original plant, giving breeders the chance to clone only the best, and it hastens the plant's growth process. Tissue-culture methods are being tested by cloning laboratories on other plants as well.
