The conservative parties, Rassemblement pour la Republique (RFR) and Union pour la Democratia Francaise (UDF), won wide margins of victory in the elections on March 28, 1993. Francois Mitterrand, a Socialist, remains president, and named Edouard Balladur of the RFR as prime minister.
