Building with timber

Article Abstract:

The building principles and design used in modern buildings with timber frames ensure long-term durability, according to a report by the Building Research Establishment. This contradicts previous claims that timber-frame construction led to interstitial condensation. Timber frame has a high fire performance, and a normal house construction has a 30 min fire resistance rate for intermediate floors and outside walls. Thermal insulation is placed in timber-framed walls to prevent condensation. The thermal efficiency, structural stability, and use of timber frame in multi-storey buildings is also discussed.

How to make the most of technical constraints

Article Abstract:

The relationship between the architect and the engineer is fluid and co-operative. Engineers should led by architects' intent and use their skills to achieve elegant solutions to technical problems. Even where the engineering of a project is the dominant concern, engineers should not determine the design of the structure.
