Article Abstract:

The UK's Monopolies and Mergers Commission gave its approval to two proposed mergers in the electric power industry: Power Gen's acquisition of Midlands Electricity and National Power's bid for Southern Electric. If approved, these mergers could hurt competition and increase rates for the consumer.

In a controversial decision Britain's Monopolies and Mergers Commission decided to allow two huge electric power company mergers. It is feared that PowerGen's takeover of Midland Electric and National Power's takeover of Southern Electric will seriously reduce competition.

Lang pulls the plug

Article Abstract:

The UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission recommended permitting PowerGen and National Power to each acquire two other electricity companies, but Lang announced that such mergers would not be conducive to competition. The political aspects of the situation are discussed.
