Research on two species of European flycatcher undertaken by a team of evolutionary biologists led by Glenn Peter Saetre appears to confirm Theodosius Dobzhansky's reinforcement theory of mating. The study shows how reinforcement operates to limit instances of interbreeding between the species.

Research at the University of California on the birthing of hyena young shows that the process is extremely risky for both mother and cub, because the large cubs must pass through the mother's pseudo-masculine genitalia. Hyena females' high testosterone levels are behind the difficult births.
