Foreign investment surges

A study by Bain & Co. shows that although the value of mergers and acquisitions in Japan more than halved during the first half of 2001, the value of foreign investments almost tripled. Foreign investment in the Japanese economy is expected to usher in a period of restructuring.

A blunt warning for insurers

Article Abstract:

Standard and Poor's Corp. and Moody's Investors Service Inc. have warned Japan's insurance industry that payment cuts to policyholders will result in downgrades, possibly to default levels. Small Japanese life insurance companies would like government permission for payout reduction to avoid bankruptcy, but the ratings agencies do not approve.

Beware the 'bargain' stocks: Slumping prices scare away Japan's investors

Securities prices in Japan have fallen since Sept. 11, many to below 100 yen, and even below 50 yen. Analysts agree that most companies that fall below the 50 yen mark are headed for closure, but some may still rebound.
