Telefonica SA's beleaguered chairman, Juan Villalonga, is planning to resign from his post on July 26, 2000. Villalonga, who will be replaced by Cesar Alierta, was coming under growing pressure to resign as a result of a regulatory probe into insider trading charges.

European telephone companies Telecom Italia SpA of Italy, Portugal Telecom SA of Portugal and Telefonica SA of Spain were included in the groups that acquired three of the four most sought-after companies sold as part of the privatization of Brazil's Telecomunicacoes Brasileiras SA, which is also called Telebras. The European phone firms outbidded US phone companies that reportedly included SBC Communications Inc., AirTouch Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. The Telebras privatization, which is among the biggest privatizations in the world, generated $18.85 billion in totality for the sale of a dozen pieces of Telebras sold by the Brazilian government.

Graham Wallace was appointed as the new chief executive officer of Cable & Wireless PLC. Mr. Wallace is the CEO of the company's cable television unit. His appointment ended Cable & Wireless's two-month search for a new CEO. Mr. Wallace said that the company is planning to remain independent, at least for the time being. Cable & Wireless has been seen as a candidate for either a merger or acquisition.
