Beer in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Production of beer in the Netherlands increased by 40% over the 10-year period to 1997. Production totalled 24.7 million hl in 1997 and nearly half of this production was exported. The major Dutch beer producer Heineken contributes strongly to these export figures. Heineken N.V. has around 40% of the Dutch beer market and it is the second biggest brewer in the world. Three other Dutch producers, Interbrew N.V., Grolsche N.V. and Bavaria B.V., together account for a further 51% of the Dutch beer market. Retail outlets account for almost two-thirds of Dutch beer sales.

Beer in Belgium

Article Abstract:

Many of Belgium's small breweries have been shut down or purchased by large brewers during the 1990s. However, there is still a large number of small breweries, and their extremely individualistic speciality beers account for more than 30% of Belgian beer consumption. The mainstream beers are Pils or lager, which accounts for around 75% of beer production and 70% of beer consumption. Domestic consumption is forecast to fall to 9 million hl over the period to 2004, but it may be possible to balance this out by developing export markets.

Beer in Spain

Article Abstract:

Beer production in Spain has been around 2,500 mn litres for several years. Imports have increased and now represent about 7% of consumption. Exports amounted to just a quarter of imports in 1997. There has been a net fall in consumption per person of more than two litres since 1990. There are five leading groups, representing nearly 90% of beer output. Around a third of beer sales is via the grocery trade.
