Bechtel breaks new ground in China: firm's executives consider themselves project-financing guinea pigs

Bechtel Enterprises Inc. plans to construct a major project-financed toll road in Shenzhen, China. The six-lane Shenzhen-Heao toll road, which will rely on the revenue it generates to pay off bank loans or bonds, will cost from $300 million to $400 million, depending on bids from local contractors. The US construction giant and its partners are also prepared to guarantee construction costs, the completion timetable, the quality of construction work and the volume of traffic on the road.

China's antigraft drive doesn't root out skeptics

China's antigraft effort is believed to be motivated by the desire to eliminate opposition to President and Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin. Jiang, who is expected to succeed Prime Minister Deng Xiaoping, is seen as being very timid. The antigraft drive is being used as means for Jiang to demonstrate his political power. The drive has resulted in the arrest of over 47,560 officials in the first six months of 1995.

France's Alcatel found winning formula in China

Alcatel-Alsthom S.A. (Alcatel) is one of the most successful foreign telecommunications firms in China today with a 43% market share and more than $2 billion in total sales. Analysts attribute the French company's success to its readiness to trade technology and local production for market share. Alcatel still manages to retain its lead even as competitors try to imitate its strategies.
