Deregulation of the Australian utilities market lead to the highest number of global state-owned utility privatizations during the first half of 1999. Australian advisory firms acted for a 29.8 billion Australian dollar industry in 1999, with the largest deal being the 1,168.3 Australian dollar takeover of insurance firm GIO Australian Holdings by Credit Suisse First Boston in April.

Italy and Spain are becoming increasingly popular as destinations for international private equity houses because of their relatively undeveloped markets. The Italian buyout market reached 1.2 billion pounds sterling in 1999, up by around 300%, while Spain's market rose 80% to 800 million pounds sterling.
