Greece's foreign minister Antonis Samras has been fired for his unwillingness to compromise with the newly-independent republic of Macedonia on the issue of Macedonia's name. Grecian Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis is under heavy pressure from the European Community to recognize Macedonian independence.

Just deserts: Greece

Greece contiunues to object to the use by the newly independent Yugoslavian state of Macedonia of the name Macedonia. Incoming minister of economics Stefanos Manos hopes to turn the attention of his government away from the Macedonian dispute toward the country's economic program.

Article Abstract:

Greece is angering the international community by its refusal to recognize the independence of the neighboring state of Macedonia, which has broken free of Yugoslavia. Greece is fearful it may annex the Greek northern province which goes by the same name.
