Bad to worse: Albania

Article Abstract:

Albania's government is in a state of chaos, with rebels having captured the southern half of the country and Pres Sali Berisha virtually ceding power by naming a Socialist prime minister. Foreigners flee and looters run wild as anarchy reigns. Prospects for planned June 1997 elections are discussed.

Hope, and danger, for ethnic Albanians

Article Abstract:

Fears that a civil war or civil unrest will manifest in Albania grow as calls for the combining of the three republics of Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo increase, as well as protests in Macedonia. Attacks by the Kosovo Liberation Army since 1996 and economic problems do not help matters.
