Emperor Akihito of Japan will visit China to encourage more commerce between the two countries. Relations have been strained in the past by the Tiananmen Square massacre of pro-democracy demonstrators in 1989 and Japan's occupation of China during the 1930s and 1940s.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan will begin a six-day visit to China on Oct 23, 1992. Japan has a large trade imbalance with China and is trying convince its trade partner to change its unfair trade practices.
