BELGIUM: LHSP PREPARES INNOVATIVE TERMINAL

Article Abstract:

Lernout & Hauspie is preparing an innovative terminal featuring Intel's StrongARM II small size processor (available during the second half of 2000) and the Linux operating system. Known under the NAK project name, the terminal includes a limited version of VoiceXPress (25,000 words, compared to 400,000 for the standard version), the Belgian speech software publisher's voice dictation software. NAK also includes LHSP's speech synthesis engine (RealSpeak Text-To-Speech) where a very realistic female voice may read any text displayed on the screen (four languages available today). While engineers are working at a dramatic reduction in RAM (RealSpeak and VoiceXPress grab 128 MB in the prototype's space), LHSP is actively looking for a manufacturer. The company hopes its NAK terminal, half a personal assistant, half a portable phone will be operational before the end of 2000.

Denmark: Nextlink's "BlueSpoon" attracts attention

Article Abstract:

Danish Nextlink is challenging major rivals such as GN Netcom, Nokia, Ericsson among other things with its launch of a 10g wireless ear-phone named BlueSpoon that is smaller than a similar product by Ericsson. BlueSpoon, which is based on the Bluetooth technology, has a built-in microphone and loudspeaker and a range of ten metres. BlueSpoon attracted attention at the Comdex IT fair recently due to its small size, and Nextlink has been approached by a number of Japanese and US companies to become a sub-contractor to them. BlueSpoon production will be initiated as from the beginning of 2002 at Ortofon-owned Scan Micro.
