The success of Austria's dairy product exports is explained partly with the high quality of the products but also with the BSE and foot-and-mouth epidemics on the export markets that cut production in the countries affected. In the first quarter of 2001 Austria's exports of dairy products increased 10% and imports 4.7%. In 2000 exports amounted to Sch 6.6bn, up 18% from 1999

Austria's second-largest dairy NOM is to increase exports to Spain and Portugal. In year 2002 the company aims to generate a turnover of Sch 250mn-300mn there. Contrary to its rival Bergland, which is betting on its own brands and saw a 35% increase in exports in the first 7 months of 2001, NOM sees good potential in private labels. The company is also betting on PET bottles. In this segment, NOM is the second-largest supplier in Europe, after Danone.
