Japan continues to be Spain's largest trading partner in Asia, although there was a slight decrease in Spanish exports to that country in 1991. Exports to China, Hong Kong and South Korea, Spain's other top Asian trading partners, increased by significant levels in the same year. However, Spain is still hounded by trade imbalances in favor of its Asian trading partners. Subsidiaries of the government holding group, Instituto Nacional de Industria, made the most significant inroads into the Asian market in 1991.

Spain's keenness to expand its Asian involvement is spearheaded by the Spanish government's Japan Plan. The government will stage three exhibitions of Spanish consumer products in Japan during 1998 in an attempt to reinforce business ties between the two countries. The Spanish government is also keen to encourage more Japanese tourists to visit Spain. Leading Spanish banks which are establishing their presence in other Asian countries envisage the growth of markets for Spanish goods in China and South Korea.
