The fishing and crabbing industries thrive in the remote island of Unalaska in the Bering Strait. There are no major oilfields to spur competition from the petroleum industry, and Japanese sushi bars keep the seafood industries booming. A wild frontier life still exists on this island.

Economists believe Japan will increase its direct investment in Asia when its own economy revives. Japan will take advantage of the area's vast potential, high growth rate and low wages. The US and the EC will lag behind Japan in Asian investment.
